Evaluation Research

Evaluation is a form of applied research which can be used to meet a number of needs. It uses research methods to assess and improve the adequacy of human services, organisations or programmes. For health promotion programmes, it can be used to:

  • set objectives and identify strategies
  • assess how well a programme is being implemented and what effects it has
  • identify strengths and weaknesses
  • fulfill accountability requirements (Turner et al., 1992, p.6)
In working in this area, the Alcohol & Public Health Research Unit has adopted a set of conceptual frameworks and methodologies, which are explained below.
